I knew immediately what 31 degrees was....1 degree below freezing If we ever have to switch over to the metric system that the rest of the world seems to be on, I'm going to be very confused

I’m old enough to predate metric here in Canada, and I still hate it.
Partly cloudy with 30 percent chance of flurries. Ice fog patches developing after midnight. Wind northwest 20 km/h becoming light late this evening. Low minus 40. Wind chill minus 42 this evening and minus 50 overnight. Frostbite in minutes.

We're getting those temperatures coming over lake Erie into parts of Ohio wind gust, freezing temperatures, and accumulating snow. Also chance of power outages.
Apparently, according to a UK news feed i've been looking at, as many as 37 US states are in for some shocking weather over the coming days. Looks like Ohio is one of them!
It also went on to say that the UK could be in for it's hottest 2023 since records began.
The former looks like it's already started, though how they can predict a blighty heatwave so far out is beyond me.

that is correct. i am in denver, colorado, and when the cold front hit us yesterday afternoon the temperature dropped 32 degrees in 7 minutes. it is currently -12 degrees with a real-feel of -19. so far all is well with my indoor tanks, but im certain my garage pond has frozen completely solid.
I must admit that I get a certain perverse pleasure out of hearing that someone else is even colder than we are here in my area. We're right around -20C now, about 5 degrees colder last night, with a warming trend over the next week forecast...about typical for this time of year. You're definitely in a cold snap,

but I'm sure it isn't the first time and it won't be the last. You're inconvenienced, but not terrified and not unprepared.
But it's a little scarier to hear the forecast for so many people further south who may never have seen this kind of weather, especially if they're on the younger side. Time to hunker down and bundle up, and don't leave your dogs outside even if they are accustomed to your "normal" winter weather. I shudder to think of the homeless in areas about to be hard hit.
It's simple: they can't. They seem to bat about 50/50 on forecasts for a week ahead. A whole year, or a whole season? Ha! The weather supercomputer pulls a forecast out of its digital anus...the meteorologists blithely repeat it...and then one of two things happens.
Possibility #1: the forecast turns out to be correct. "See? See? We told you this would happen!"
Possibility #2: the actual weather does not even resemble the forecast; it's as though two different planets are being discussed. Crickets...followed by the next forecast...
