How Long Has Your Equipment Lasted?

I ran 2x eheim 2028 on a 240g fresh along with 1x eheim 2217 and 1x fluval 303 since 2004. All these canister filters are workhorses and highly dependable. Both 2028 are super silent and just like the others require very little service. I agree that the 2028s are more likely to fail after 4 years unless the primary seal rings are maintained properly by applying lubricants such as petroleum jelly when servicing the filters. In addition to ensuring the seals are always at optimum condition by lightly smearing with Vaseline, I make it a point to replace the seals with new o-rings every 3-4 years. I suppose it's a small investment to get the full benefit of these best of class filters....eheim still is the brand to emulate in the filter industry, they set the bar when it comes to design and quality, very much like apple..game changer in the hobby.
Well I've always been a annoying cheap buyer of fish hardware as a result things I get usaully die between the 6 month and 3 year mark. Fluval sumbersible filters though have been the exception amazing in what they get done and how long they last. They remove a great amount of physical waste from the water! They are also very flexible and you can use them for all kinds of goofy things.
They don't function well as biological filters but that was never there design.
I've had 2 for 10 years, the large and small one. They have been in and out of tanks and never fail to function phenominally with regular cleaning. Even without cleaning, once for a year in my moms tank the thing just keeps plugging away.

This has been an amazing thread. Thanks for the concept. Perhaps this idea could be expanded with other areas of focus. For instance:
* Best bang for the buck in lighting, all things considered?
* Most user friendly dwarf cichlids?
* Best, most interesting fish parents?

Well, I think that if one purchases a decent product, most will last long as long as proper maintainence is performed on it..... Magnum 350 that got new gaskets because 1 was lost in a few year break that it took. but have had it since 1992 or so... Using a Bio-bag in the center really helps to control filter media getting dropped into the propeller chamber... Which can cause damage to the propellers magnet and cause noise. Regular cleaning of the can, internal parts and hoses will keep the 350s running smoothly.
Funny you say that because I have a Magnum 350 that is close to 20 years old. Third impeller but that's mostly because it's been used as a carbon filter. Original motor and original media container. I also have 2 Hagen( aquaclear) 801's that are over 16 years old and still going strong
Those orange homers 5 gallon buckets from home depot.. i left one outside in my carport for a few months and it didn't seem to crack or weaken even though it had been heated and cooled heated and cooled
well I have had an AC110 and a Fluval 404 running my 55 gal for 6-7 yrs. now. The AC has had 0 problems and runs great. The fluval has just started to leak around from the o-ring. It has resolved by itself for now but I am sure by the next filter maintenance session I will be changing it.
