Keeping Gar in a Pond?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ohhh, thats a good idea!!

Well, I went fishing yesterday in my pond and caught 3 smallmouth bass (10 in, 12 in, 18 in), 1 walleye (about 1 ft, not the largest one in there), and 1 catfish (2 ft; not sure what kind, but not the big flathead), so I definitely have a good food supply in there since two of the bass were barely at the legal size limit and I only put legal sized fish in there plus the catfish was only about 1.5 ft when I put it in there. Does this bode well for keeping gar in there too?

I think it will be fine for gar. I would go with a group of longnose as discussed, and try to get them as large as possible. This site had gar at one time:

http://www.aquaculturestore.com/fwverts.html#misc

But I don't see them on the list now. There's pickerel though, and they would be very cool to have in there.

Be careful with TFD, definitely contact them and make sure you're getting what you're supposed to be getting. They're generally more of a wholesaler/LFS supplier and you get a lot of mis-labeling. Good chance if you order gar you'll get Florida, as they're the most common LFS gar.

I found a 4" alligator gar in NH for 17.99 you could also get them at www.aquascape .com they do get to be 9 ft long so I wouldnt suggest swimming with them There is a video on utube of guys fishing for them with crossbows with reels on them I think its labeled bow hunting for alligator gars or something like that they are huge worth checking out

Ok, I'll be careful of what I order. I saw a longnose for sale on aquabid from TFD, and it matched what a small longnose should look like so I think my chances are pretty good of getting a longnose instead of a florida. However, I will still contact them when I go to order just to be sure. I don't plan on swimming with the gar lol, although it would be no different from swimming in a river near me, just more gar per gallons of water.

Yeah I would definitely check with them before ordering, would be rough if you ended up with Florida gars and no place to put them.

Swimming would be cool, do you have bluegill? I'd be more worried about nippy bluegill than the gar (well unless it was huge gator gar of course).
