Keeping Gar in a Pond?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hmmm. try about 30. right around there. if you get too many u just take them out.

The gar will be fine, but he WILL do significant damage to the other fish species being kept in the lake.

I'm not sure if you need 30 of them, maybe just like 15 or so. Especially if you are planning on putting some Gator Gar in there too.
What's the timeline on this lookin like? I wanna see some pics soon

Gator Gar: I ruled out gator gar due to size and cost to stock sufficient numbers, but I'm all for getting one or two if I find some that are 1 ft or bigger.

Longnose Stocking Number: The thing with the number of longnose gar was to ensure some survived since I have fish in the pond that are capable of eating other fish that are about the same size as the gar that I would stock.

Timeline: I'd say by the end of the summer at most; most likely by the end of June.

Pictures: I have pics of the pond in both this post and on my page, and I will take pics of the gar when I get them.

can we see pics of this pond? It says picture not available???

I think you should get a gator gar and maybe some giant cats if possible. Just call up a fish hatchery and have them put a few thousand fish in the pond as feeders :D

*sigh* guys we went over all of this, i am leaving it at that

Ya, crocodile gar (alligator gar cross) is out due to size and difficulty to obtain, as are alligator gar most likely. I'm sticking with the longnose gar, but the idea of adding some giant catfish sounds feasible as long as the two species can coexist. As far as feeder fish go, I stock the pond with minnows plus the bass spawn yearly providing larger food options for other fish.
