Lots of pics past and present

Yeah had a 5 ft and 6 ft marine tanks about 10 years ago. Never found it too difficult, live rock and a big protien skimmer.
I was in Newquay aquarium a few months back and they had a large lion fish display tank. It was very impressive, even the wife loved it. Started me thinking about trying something similar.
I'm also very drawn towards a rift lake set up. I spoke with @RD. Months ago about a malawi biotope, I've still got the idea of that rattling around in my head aswel.

I have had the same thought of turning my big tank into a lion fish tank, what I used to keep in my old 6ft marine tank, loved them. Personable stunning and bullet proof.

Yeah always liked them.
A porcupine puffer I once had still remains my all time favourite fish.

Its a fish I have wanted to own, that or a dogface puffer. I will get the little tank stocked and seriously think if I want to change the big tank over.

It's been so long since I've had a marine tank that I can't truly remember how much extra time and maintenance it took. My memory is terrible, I blame it on my age and having to many nights on the wacky cigarettes in my youth.
Porcupine puffers are like puppy dogs, they have so much personality and character, much more than any large cichlid I've kept. Nothing I have ever kept came close really.
I'd like to try an expanding foam and peat fibre background on my 4 foot. Like the ones done for dart frog vivariums. I've been dying to give this a go for some time. I think the process could be very enjoyable and a chance to get really creative.
As for the big tank. Could go marine, malawi or keep what I've got and rescape. I do like the chocalate cichlids a lot so not sure.

You can set up a marine tank to be just as easy possibly easier but its £££££. I have heard that about the marine puffers, certainly my lion fish were on par with most large cichlid just with out the aggression.
Never heard of expanding foam and peat fibre backgrounds. Is it a DIY background.

Yes. It doesn't look hard to do to me.

It's basically expanding foam sprayed onto the back wall, carved and covered in silicone. While the silicone is still wet, substrates like sand, peat fibres, orchid bark etc can be pushed on to cover the entire surface.
There are lots of tutorials for this type of background on YouTube. Check out serpa designs for ideas.

That chocolate cichlid is to die for @Stanzzzz7. Have you just got the one? What's it like with your plants? Mild mannered?

I bought one a couple of months ago after seeing pics of finwins choc, it's only 3" so still quite drab yet. If mine eventually only has half the colour that yours and finwins has i'll be well stoked.

They truly are a breathtaking fish, they remind me of the synspillum a lot.

By the way, nice tanks, as always.

Thanks.
I've got 4 chocolate cichlids. They are very easy going on each other and tank mates. Even when they spawn they are not very aggressive. Mine never bothered plants when I had them in the tank.
They are great fish, worth being patient with. They start of a little drab but once the get about 4 or 5 inches they really colour up. They are like chameleons always changing colour from emerald green to pink to red and the intensity of the red in their eyes when spawning is something else. A very underrated fish imo.
