More tank pics, updated

I was nearly down one parrot today. Went downstairs this afternoon and noticed Kong's tank was somewhat cloudy. I didn't see her at first. She was tail standing and barely breathing behind her house. Her slime coat hung off her body and eyes. Very pale. I immediately removed her and stripped down her tank. In the past her tank was prone to crashes but I thought I'd solved that issue. There were no problems for months. So I'm trying to figure out what happened. She just had a filter clean/water change two days ago. Didn't make sense.

Well in breaking down the filter I found a thick clog of 'stuff' that was sucked up into the intake. Got that out, cleaned out everything including the sand and refilled.

Here Kong is in the bucket. She recovered immediately and looked completely normal. This is a half hour later after I rescued her. The resiliency of these cichlids is amazing. Another 15 minutes and I would be posting something else. But here she is, in all her orangeness.

Very nice pic...her slime coat doesn’t look so affected in this pic

I'm so used to seeing my fish I don't notice the growth much of the time. Well I underestimated Kong's current size. My hand is exactly 8 inches from the base of my palm to the tip of my index finger. I'm taking the pic with my other hand so I spread fingers to brace her against the bucket. She watched me with one eye...another cockeyed cichlid!

Puttin' the "J" in jumbo. She's a big gal.

Its been documented how I've been trying to get my Oscar to eat more than vitamin soaked meal worms. The raw shrimp experiment was a bust. But at last I found a food he may love even more. EARTHWORMS. I was doing some work in the back yard and saw a few worms so I figured what the hell, try them and see if he'll eat them. So I collected a few and rinsed them off. The first worm I dangled in front of his nose and he kinda just looked at it. So I dropped it to the bottom. Brick went after it like a shot...eyeballed it, grabbed it, spit it out twice then down the hatch! So I tried another one. GULP n' CHEW. The others didn't even hit the floor before they were gone. He ended up polishing off 5 earthworms. The greedy pig gave me the 'feed me' bit even after eating all that fresh meat. But now I can order some red wigglers...already have the vitamin feed for 'em. So, success at last. :grinyes:

In other small news, Bobo is healing from a couple of side scratches he got earlier this week...had a bit of white meat showing but the scrapes are healing up nicely. His lips looked good too, until about an hour ago when he tangled with the parrot. So once again, busted. The acara and rainbow swim with the Chocolate a lot, especially the acara. Once in a while Felix even pecks at Bobo's fins. Kinda crazy...doesn't seem to bother Bobo though.

Since I discovered Brick loves earthworms as well as mealworms, I decided to set up a worm bin. The red wigglers arrived today, all live and healthy. The bedding I have has the food/vitamin/water built in. It was a bit dry, so I added just enough bottled water to make it slightly moist. The directions say no chlorinated tap water. Setup was easy, about 5-10 minutes. Used a 16 gallon tote. I drilled air holes in the top and side, approx. 1/4 inch in diameter.

Hopefully the worms grow fast...Brick will go through these wigglers in jig time. I added some apple chunks. The worms buried themselves in a couple of minutes. This will definitely save money once they get established. I may test out rolling the worms in crushed pellets. He gulps them so fast it may be the best way to get pellet in him! I'll probably place another order today. Bedding layer is about 1 1/2 inch thick.
