I am planning on making the same pond in my backyard. I have read about people using all thread on the corners of logs; however, I would prefer using screws.

Did you have to use heavy duty lags, or did you just use long wood screws?

I only used those gray coated deck screws from lowes. Long enough to go through one board and into the one under it. I just screwed one bored to the one under it all the way to the top and it has not budged.

I have what I think is a small male RES to go with the big female I have now. I plan to possibly this summer add a better dry area for them to come out and sun and possibly lay eggs.

Thanks for the comments on the pond and TV...Pond was my idea but I have to give the wife the TV credit...not that I wouldn't have thought of it sooner or later but she beat me to it lol.

As for price I dont know since I didnt keep track....but take out the filter and pump...each landscaping timber was about 2 bucks...I dont remember how many I used but you can probably look at it in the pics and figure it out. I made it so the front timbers were full 8' and the sides were 4' so I could use one timber for 2 levels on the side. The foam board I used on the sides was cheap from lowes...I believe I used one or maybe 2 4x8 sheets. The bottom was just some gravel they had at lows too...maybe for concrete mix. Its not important what kind it is...just something small to help smooth out the bottom and give it a little cushion if something falls in. The liner was 50-100...I cant remember...I got it local becasue I couldnt wait...I could have got it online cheaper. It is not very expensive to build it like this...the filter and pumps were probably more. My UV is out so the water is green and it has leaves from winter. Once I get it spiffed up I will get some more pics...I have lacked on the updates but its pretty much unchanged.

I built one similar to yours, after having saw yours it made more sense. Rather than screwing each timber together I instead drilled 3/4" holes at the ends of each 8' and 4' piece and placed a 3.5'x1/2" piece of cut re-bar down. For the inner walls I choose to use pieces of plywood I already had and a liner I had used on my prior 1k gal in ground pond. I also plated the tops with 1"x6"x8' outdoor deck planks on each side similar to yours. I left about 3" of re-bar sticking out of each of the four corners and then placed 4x 4'x4"x4" 3/4" drilled columns that will soon support a small open roof. As far as the filtration goes its still a work in progress consisting of two bio filters and a UV light(on sale from lowes for $35) and some el cheapo pump(3500gph i believe) off of ebay i bought sometime last year for a $100.

That's a nice looking turtle pond.:clap I came across your post while searching Google for outdoor above ground ponds. I'm about ready to make one myself but I was planning on building the sides with 2x4(or 2x6) frames. Now I'm going to have to re-think my plans.

I believe you said the dimensions were roughly 4' x 8'. How deep is the pond? I'd like to know the depth from the bottom up to the last timber where you folded the liner over.

I came across this series of videos that shows how I was going to construct my outdoor pond.

Maybe this might help someone else with ideas.

To put it together I just used some deck screws. I laid the first row flat on the ground. Then the next row sat on top of that but I overlapped the corners. Meaning the top front board was longer than the bottom front board so I could screw the top front board into the bottom left and right board, Follow? I just screwed the boards to each other for each layer with a 3" screw I think.

Sorry I missed the post from a while ago.

very rough sketch below. Pretend you are looking at the front of the pond. The small blocks on the side are the boards going front to back. The red lines are the screws.

Sorry I missed this too...I dont know how deep it is I will have to measure. If I had to redo it again I would have probably dug some of the ground out inside the timber frame. It would look the same from the outside but it would be deeper in the pond.

Once I get my water cleared back up ill take some new pics. My UV is out in my main filter and I have another one rigged. I also got some new koi I want to take pics of.
