Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

Sounds like the algae is competing with the pothos and imo the direct sunlight is the reason why you have algae problems in the tank, is it ONLY growing on roots or other parts of the tank? If sun is shining into the tank that isn't ideal for the plant. Try adding a cheap cfl dome clamp on light like I did (10$ @walmart or lhs w/ bulb) make sure cfl is 6500k. And stop the sunlight via shades/shutters or w/e. Also very high nitrates could cause this.

Do you test water? If so ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels plz!

Also trim the roots back and ANY dead or decaying yellowish leaves off to focus growth back to the plant!

A picture would help!

yes you are right F1 VET the algae is only on the roots.the sunlight hits from the window to the leaves ,which i feel was the reason for the strong growth initially.i have now covered the the side of the tank with a cloth during the day.

No. haven't tested the water.

Yes i have trimmed the roots and got rid of the algae.I do notice some new growth after doing this. Will it matter if the bulb is placed on the wall in the center mark of the tank ?coz my plants hang on the right side of the tank and not on the center. do u think it will affect their growth for not getting enough light

You are the reason i started this setup.Thank you very much for inspiring me and many others around the world ..

1st off I sincerely appreciate your kind words! Members and fk like your are what inspired me to make this thread!

Secondly, what kind of lighting do you have for your tank and how long is the light cycle?

Lastly, more or larger water changes should help w/ ridding of the algae. Although the plant thrives on nitrates it initially consumes some of the ammonia before the BB can convert it to nitrite then nitrates so as long as theres an ammonia source like fish and live stock then that should be fine to up the water change amount. Try 30-40% 2x per week dosing w/ prime and after a few weeks I bet that algae will clear up unless its due to high tank lighting or duration!

New growth is great and remember trim/prune the leaves that are browning or yellowing that will focus growth on the overall plant!

Thanks a lot for your kind words F1VET..

My tank is an open top tank ..so the lights are a cfl which is placed on the wall and an underwater light which is placed in the aquarium.PLUS good indirect sunlight for most of the day.and at night ambient room light.T8 tubes underneath the plants (lucky i guess).I have to only switch on those lights only for about 3-4 hrs a day.So roughly you can say that it gets about 12-14 hrs of light( i cover the top with a sheet... glass type).but please note that i have already blocked off the direct light hitting my tank. The lights just hit the leaves now for about 2weeks now and i already see some good signs.I do 30-50% water change weekly.and clean the roots .However i did improvise a bit ;).I put the plants in a pot topped it with gravel and suspended it from the aquarium.2 weeks later i have about 4-5 leaves popping up and a good root growth.I even have an stone beneath it.So i guess due to this the roots are not attacked by the algae.I forgot to mention that i even have a Philondendron plant which seems to be growing nice and strong .already 2 leaves since this setup (2 weeks).I even have a philo plant which is throwing shoots from the bottom .I guess it's finally starting to get a hold ..IT' still trial and error stage ..
I guess iam to blame for this entire mess..coz around 10 months back when i started this i was blocking that one side of my tank during the day. Then i just forgot to cover this (got lazy ...lol:ROFL:). I was getting a new leaf almost every other day.I even skipped water change for 15-20 days during which it just exploded in growth.the leaves doubled and the stems thickened in size.It was like this thing was on steroids...lol.

Yea lots of nitrates and ammonia will help with growth like a natural fertilizer! But that can have bad effects on fish so I never like to exceed 20-30ppm nitrates, lower levels equate to better growth/health of fish!

I would also say you have a lot of light both ambient and direct that may be contribution to your algae. I'd cut the photo period down to 8-10 hours and see if that helps! Other then that post some pics when you get a chance and keep us updated!

Happy PoThOs! :D

Yes sir!!!.i have some pic of it when it was first growing like a weed...2013-03-08-705.jpg2013-03-08-706.jpg2013-03-08-707.jpg2013-03-08-708.jpg

have since changed the aquarium to 60-70 gallons .As you can see the root growth in the pic..it went all the way to the substrate..:headbang2.And all the growth were from cuttings which were discarded from my office during pruning.I took out the cloth covering mytank to shoot the pic .guess i have made you proud for a while F1VET..Iam sorry for my negligence :(.Just have a look at the leaves when it was at it's peak....(in my case)

I'd say its a mix of little to zero water flow near the roots and sunlight. If you have a circulator or powerhead point it toward the roots or even your filter output. A bubbler may suffice but just to help it heal for now!

I've found a lot of fish keeping is trial and error, there are variables we will never know until we get to that point! Its all a fun, enjoyable, rewarding and peaceful experience!

The slightest attempt to better a pets opportunistic way of life not only makes me proud but also goes a long way in my book!

Exactly..these pics are old (6-8 months).Since then it just started melting .(growth+ roots).then i changed my whole setup .i put them in pot with gravels.and directed my canister output to the the plant plus an air stone at the base of the plant.I have noticed satisfactory growth in the last 2-3 weeks.just noticed today a vine finally started to sprout after nearly 5 months.Guess my pothos finally will take off ,.but in my opinion i think nothing beats sunlight for growth..just my 2 cents...;)

Hi all, I've decided to give this a try. I added some pothos cuttings to a hang on back refugium a few weeks ago. A few leaves are turning yellow. I've read this is because of too much water. What am I doing wrong?
