Bullets are pretty harmless too, except to those who get hit by them.

As Sherlock said " ...when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

My point is, that if you are not sure, then err on the side of caution . Eliminate the sand, eliminate a possible cause.
The Cobalt content is another potential source of toxicity for the rays.

Bullets have a well defined mechanism for killing your. Large amounts of chromium and cobalt have a well defined mechanism for killing you. Microscopic amounts of cobalt will not kill you as far as we know.

As far as erring on the side of caution. Well considering that you can actually drink yourself to death with water it becomes quite impossible to do that. Many people use this sand with rays and have little or no problem so it can't be the sand as a whole. Now if the manufacturing process is faulty in your batch maybe but I doubt it otherwise the other rays would be affected.

I can't believe with the cost of stingrays that people can justify using questionable substrate for NO other reason then THIER own prefrence (color).

We spend hundreds, most of us thousands, on rays but are quick to save a buck on SUBSTATE? Seriously? THE cheapest element of an aquarium?

NO long term effects of this sand that has been introduced to aquariums what? A year or 2 ago? So IF I poison my liver daily for 2 years and am NOT dead then that means I will NEVER die form it?

I CAN'T be only one that thinks this is rediculous......

Unless you are going with a bear bottom tank you will introduce the similar stuff with any sand you use, unless you use medical grade sand. The fact that regular sand is natural doesn't mean it won't contain cobalt, chromium or any other toxin. It just mean that the manufacturer hasn't added them.

copper won;t kill us either, it is useful with other fish species as a medication, but small amounts of it are deadly to rays. Your liver alone weighs more than the ray we are talking about. Erring on the side of caution in this case is not impossible or even difficult, simply remove the sand! Especially a tank where meds are being used should imo be barebottom. There must be other brands that don;t contain those metals, and other brands that are not silica based.

isn't silica found in quartz, sandstone, and many other common rocks?? What makes it harmful in aquarium use? Not trying to argue, just trying to learn./
